Description
Leadership can be understood as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. So what makes a leader?
This interactive workshop “Leadership Skills” will outline the tools, skills, traits, attitudes, and behaviour that are useful in becoming an effective leader. The course highlights the advantages and disadvantages of different management and leadership styles and gives opportunity to reflect upon leadership role expectations and one’s own conception as a leader. Participants will get acquainted with group dynamics and the art of building teams of members of different gender, age, and cultural background. Time will be spent on how to deal with challenging situation coined by emotions and conflicts. Input sessions will alternate with discussions, role plays, activities, self-assessments, and other application exercises that will allow participants to turn theory into practice.

  • Management styles – pros and cons
  • The leadership role – self-conception and expectations
  • Motivation – intrinsic versus extrinsic
  • Leading teams: Groups dynamics and team building
  • Clear and outcome-oriented communication
  • Delegation – dos and don‘ts
  • Management by objectives
  • Challenging situations:
    • Cultural, gender, and age diversities
    • Dealing with emotions
    • Dealing with conflicts pro-actively

Who it is for: Doctoral researchers from their second year onwards, who will work in academia or industry

Prerequisite: The course 'Good Scientific Practice for Doctoral Researchers' is a good preparation for this course.
