Excellent scientists need excellent data, but they also need to be able to successfully communicate the results and significance of their research to their peers in the community in order to publish. Writing good scientific papers is hard work, even for experienced researchers. Being aware of the criteria which scientific papers must meet and managing the writing process efficiently can make the task easier.

In this workshop, you will learn about the structural and language norms for scientific papers published in English. You will also be introduced to writing and revising strategies that will help you to draft your own texts methodically, pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, and revise them effectively.

Themes and activities will include:

  • managing your writing process professionally
  • examining structural relationships within and between sections of a paper
  • developing author responsibility and reader focus
  • practising the Writing Process Approach
  • understanding the drafting and revision processes
  • assessing the appropriateness of your research question
  • giving, receiving, and using feedback competently
  • recognizing stylistically adequate and inadequate language
  • creating precise, accurate, and correct sentences

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify the needs of their readership
  • review and improve their argumentation
  • recognize and revise non-standard use of language in their own texts
  • provide peer feedback in compliance with professional guidelines
  • fulfil reviewers' expectations concerning the structural elements of research publications

Note for participants
Prior to the workshop, you will receive a “Call for Texts” requesting you to submit a sample of your own writing. This writing sample will provide the basis for peer and trainer feedback during the workshop.

Requirement concerning English language skills
To benefit from this workshop, participants should have achieved the English levels B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR self-assessment grid may be found here
