In science, we all argue in order to convince. But what does it actually mean to convince with arguments? How exactly does the mechanics of persuasion work? And what mistakes can I make? In this seminar, participants will train how to argue effectively, constructively and convincingly.

Contents

  • Effectiveness: The basis of convincing argumentation
  • Opposition mindset vs. partnership mindset
  • Why mere truth is not enough to convince – and what needs to be added
  • Avoiding the backfire effect
  • The essential role of the feedback loop for your own argumentation
  • How to react to pressure-making questioning techniques with confidence
  • What types of manipulation are there in argumentation?
  • How do I specifically recognize and react to manipulation attempts common in science (e.g. straw man, false dilemma, red hering)?
