You enjoy working in projects in science as well as in management? You like working with others on complex topics and tasks? But you are also familiar with following situation: You are highly motivated at the start of a project but feel rather frustrated at the end of it?
Especially in settings where several persons with different interests are working together on complex tasks and projects, an optimal project management is essential. But which methods and techniques are suitable for which processes and situations? Against this backdrop we will work together on the working processes in the typical course of a project and will discuss appropriate measures in terms of planning, supporting, and completion of a project. As working in (project) teams often involves challenging situations and conflicts, we will also work on how to deal with these difficult situations. Being able to identify, analyze, and handle these situations is an important competence, which is essential for the success of projects, and working in teams. Therefore, the aim of this workshop is also being able to describe the group dynamics of teams, analyze the escalation dynamics of conflict situations, and apply appropriate de-escalation techniques.

After this workshop participants will be able to

  • Define and differentiate distinct project types and their courses
  • Understand the dependency of different project variables and how to influence them
  • Understand the tasks of project management and to match them with according measures
  • Structure projects into phases and use according control measures
  • Work with stakeholder analyses, work breakdown structure, and resource plans
  • Name and work with different types of project documentation
  • Appreciate and use different roles and role expectations in and for projects
  • Apply basic communication models and techniques appropriate to a situation
  • Are aware of team processes and to operate appropriately
  • Reflect on self- and external perception in working processes, teams, and conflicts
  • Understand and analyze the development of conflicts (causes, triggers, signals)
  • Differentiate and analyze different types and levels of conflicts
  • Describe and use models of conflict diagnosis
  • Able to delineate and evaluate escalation stages of conflicts
