Summary
Leaving academia and looking for a job in the industry causes a lot of questions. This seminar provides you with essential information you will need when applying on the job market outside academia. It is recommended for international PhD´s and Postdocs, who plan to start applying in the next 12 months and have little application experience. German Participants are also welcomed.

Subjects:

  • Job search (active and passive strategies)
  • Application documents (cover letter, CV, certificates)
  • Starting salaries (influencing factors and calculation)
  • Job interviews (preparation and practice)

In this seminar you will understand how to target your search for future employment, and where you can look for vacancies. There will also be explanation and practice about the meaning of typical phrases in job advertisements. In the second part you get to find out how to apply for a job properly. You will learn how to write your cover letter and CV, and how best to adapt your application to the job description. Moreover, you will receive examples for cover letter and CV as well as recommendations for certificates. Subsequently, we will discuss typical starting salaries and practice a calculation method you can use for your future salary requests. 

On the second day, you will get general information about the interview structure, suitable clothing and salary negotiation strategies. We will also discuss your self-introduction, typical questions asked and ways of answering them while avoiding common mistakes.  

 Preparation:

Please bring a printed job ad of one of your applications or select an example vacancy for your field of interest and prepare your self-introduction for a job interview for this position.
