Consulting Services

iGRAD is the first point of contact for all questions and issues related to the education of early stage researchers at the MNF. It is not always clear with whom doctoral researchers, their research supervisors, postdoctoral researchers, or research coordinators of structured qualification programs should establish contact. iGRAD therefore provides information and counselling about specific topics and is also networked with relevant departments and advisory centres at the HHU. This makes it possible to target the right office for specific information whenever necessary.

Doctoral Researchers and Prospective Doctoral Candidates
  • During the course of a thesis project, a wide variety of questions and issues may emerge. Very often, it is not clear who would be the best person to contact for help. iGRAD represents the first point of contact for all questions related to on-going doctoral research projects at the MNF and offers a variety of services to doctoral researchers. In addition, iGRAD is networked with other departments and service centres at the HHU, so that researchers do not have to spend time looking for where the best help is available.

    Counselling for prospective doctoral researchers
What do I need to be aware of if I am interested in getting a doctoral degree? What funding resources are available? Where can I apply for travel grants? What are the relevant insurance issues if I have been awarded a scholarship? What do I need if I come from abroad to do my thesis research in Düsseldorf? What do I have to know about foreign degrees if I intend to do my doctoral research at the MNF.

These are just some examples of questions that can arise before or during a doctoral project. iGRAD is available as the first point of contact at which the faculty’s doctoral researchers and potential PhD candidates can find answers. If iGRAD cannot provide the required information directly, it will use its intramural network and contact the appropriate departments and advisory centres at the HHU for prompt clarification or counselling. For iGRAD members: counselling for career planning, career development, and employment applications.

For iGRAD members: counselling for career planning, career development, and employment applications
Which criteria are important for me in the choice of my future career? Which career paths are compatible with these criteria? What do I need to know now, if I intend to follow an academic career? Which interdisciplinary skills/qualifications are required and by whom? How can I coordinate my strategy for advanced professional education with my career choice? Where can I find relevant job vacancies and how do I read the advertisements? Where can I find useful advice and tips about applying for a position? In addition to the offers that are an integral part of its workshop program, iGRAD offers information and counselling related to many aspects of career planning, career development, and job applications to its members who are doing their doctoral research. These offers range from an evaluation (based on the “career anchor” concept) of individual needs and priorities related to career decision, through advice and tips for job applications, to planning advanced training that harmonizes with career targets (focussed competence development).

Confidential conflict counselling for doctoral researchers
Working towards a doctoral degree involves, amongst other things, dealing with a wide variety of challenges. In the worst case, these can include conflict situations whose constructive resolution may not seem to be immediately possible. This is particularly true for conflicts between doctoral researchers and their supervisors. All doctoral researchers at the MNF can seek help from iGRAD for problems related to their thesis work. They will receive confidential conflict counselling and support in developing and implementing constructive solution strategies. If requested by all parties concerned, meetings with a neutral mediator can be offered and/or arranged.

Postdoctoral researchers
  • For iGRAD members: counselling for career planning, career development, and employment applications
In addition to the offers that are an integral part of its workshop program, iGRAD offers information and counselling related to many aspects of career planning, career development, and job applications to its postdoctoral members. These offers range from an evaluation (based on the “career anchor” concept) of individual needs and priorities related to career decision, through advice and tips for job applications, to planning advanced training that harmonizes with career targets (focussed competence development).

Confidential conflict counselling and continuing support for research supervisors
More or less serious conflicts with individual trainees surely represent one of the greatest challenges in the supervisory setting and their constructive resolution is not always immediately apparent.

iGRAD thus offers its members who are supervisors counselling and/or access to relevant services. The available options range from confidential counselling through neutral mediation to offers of coaching and team-building measures. These options can be realized either directly through iGRAD or with help from iGRAD that can either name an ombudsman or suggest external experts, depending on the specific circumstances.

Information and counselling about questions related to the doctorate: scholarships/stipends, international candidates, current recommendations for doctoral research, etc.
Would you like to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of various options for financing a doctoral research project, or do you need specific information about the important features of financing a doctorate with scholarships/stipends? Are you looking for options for advertising your doctoral research positions online? Are you interested in an objective comparison of international applications? Would you like to have more concrete information about recommendations for supervising a doctorate, or do you need ideas for, or specific examples of, documents such as the “supervisory agreement” and/or “progress reports”?

iGRAD will be happy to inform and counsel you about all general questions related to a current doctoral research project.

Counselling for and realization of specific advanced training for iGRAD supervisors and their research groups
Are you interested in options for advanced training either for yourself or for your research group? Structured doctoral degree programs & Research Networks
  • Information, counselling, and support for graduate schools or comparable doctoral research programs, even at a very early stage (e.g. applications)
Since 2009, iGRAD has supported a large number of applicants and their projects, starting with the basic conceptualization and ending with the establishment of the actual programmeprogram. Depending on individual needs, iGRAD can provide basic counselling, advice, text templates, and help creating individual text passages, as well as extensive support, especially for the conceptualization of qualification programs, calls for applications, supervisory standards, and/or possible management structures, etc.

Depending on the specific circumstances, iGRAD cooperates and networks with other relevant centres and departments at the HHU and provides access to the most recent information issued by higher-level organizations and networks. (undefinediGRAD network)
To enable you to be aware of important standards and current recommendations from the outset, we would like to suggest that you take advantage of our services at the earliest possible phase of your application process.

Counselling and support when establishing and implementing approved programs
Following the approval of doctoral training programs or research networks, numerous processes and procedures often have to be established and people who will act as coordinators have to be trained. Sometimes, questions or challenges only emerge in the course of a program and these require responses that are tailored to the specific program.

iGRAD provides counselling and support for member programs from their inception. This can cover, amongst other things:

    • Making templates (e.g. for supervisory agreements, procedural rules, application forms) available and advising on their individual customizing and implementation
    • Basic information for new coordinators (e.g. “who is who”, how the university is structured, relevant administrative processes, effective strategies)
    • Collective representation vis a vis other university departments and centers
    • Practical advice and networking opportunities for coordinators
    • Realization of transparent international notification and selection processes, as well as comparability of international degrees
    • Accepting international doctoral researchers
    • information about scholarships and clarifying the status of scholarship holders
    • Conceptualizing and customizing specific program elements, in particular counselling for and/or realizing of event formats specific to the training program (e.g. in areas related to advanced training, workshops, coaching/mentoring/counselling, team-building)
    • Options for resolving conflicts
    • Implementation of and quality control/management for training programs
    • Specific iGRAD data and/or presentations for on-site inspections and reports
